Tina Houser is the executive editor of KidzMatter Magazine and the writer/editor of the This iKnow kids' church curriculum. She's the author of 17 children's ministry books, including: Building Children's Ministry, Going Live in 3...2...1, Beakers, Bubbles and the Bible Volumes 1 and 2, Hiding the Word in My Heart, Secret Weapon, Unwrapping the Servant, More Than Cookies and Punch, Easter-rific, Holiday Extravaganza, God's Campgrounds, and a few more.
She entered children's ministry in 1978 and grew to love it more and more with every experience. Since children's ministry was a relatively new idea to the church, she saw a need to give it as much credibility as possible, so she earned a degree in elementary education from Indiana University and was ordained as a minister in the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana). She now thrives on being able to train those who share her passion for reaching kids for the Kingdom.
God's greatest gift to Tina has been the opportunity to be married (for 40 years) to her husband, Ray, whose first words every morning are "Have I told you yet that I love you?" Crippling rheumatoid arthritis has been her other constant companion since her 18th birthday (but doesn't share the same love) and has been the reason behind 49 surgeries. In spite of these challenges, God is faithful to provide joy that surpasses all of it.
She now volunteers in children's ministry along with her daughter-in-law, Kelley, at Shorewood Church of God in Shorewood, Illinois where her son, Jarad, is the lead pastor. It's so much fun to "do ministry" as a family! In every spare minute, she loves ... really loves ... spending time with her 7-year-old grandtwins, Bowen and Kendall, who have provided her with a refresher course in early childhood development. But now that they're out of the preschool years, it's exciting to know that another baby is on the way. More observations to take note of!
