The Program

What does a module look like?

Each module is completed in a month and is centered around one specific topic of early childhood ministry. The components of the modules vary slightly, but are basically:

  • Introductory recorded lecture by Tina Houser (45-60 minutes).
  • A book to read during the month.
  • Homework assignment to submit by the start of the next module.
  • An online session with a guest who will engage students for 40 minutes around one area of the module topic and participate in a Q&A.
  • Interaction throughout the month within a closed Facebook group.

Core Modules

Completion of all 12 modules are required for graduation.
  • Course Name
    Date
    Course Detail
  • Partnering with Preschool Development
    OCT
    2016
This module will concentrate on understanding the development-physical, intellectual, social/emotional, and spiritual-that children 5 and under are experiencing. Our objective should be to help each child grow in a well-balanced manner.
  • Multiple Intelligences
    NOV
    2016
This module will introduce Gardner's 8 multiple intelligences and give examples of incorporating them into how we lead children and build relationships with them. This is one of the most important concepts to grasp in understanding anyone-no matter what their age.
  • Worship and Music
    DEC
    2016
This module will explore how we help kids worship during these early formative years. It's the perfect time to lay a foundation for uninhibited worship. Music is especially effective, since it directly connects to long-term memory.
  • Babies and Toddlers
    JAN
    2017
The earlier we start speaking God's truth into little lives, the more complete the spiritual foundation will be. This module will address how we can begin pouring into babies from their very first day and why it's so important.
  • The Importance of Story
    FEB
    2017
Stories are an incredible part of a preschooler's life! This module examines why story is important and a variety of ways to present God's story so that it becomes part of the spiritual foundation we lay.
  • Creating a Team
    MAR
    2017
In this module, we'll examine what to look for in early childhood team members, how to recruit them, how to keep them, and how to train them. There are unique aspects to being part of the early childhood ministry team that need to be addressed and thought through.
  • Fine Motor Skills, Gross Motor Skills, and Sensory Integration
    APR
    2017
It takes lots of practice to train muscles to do the tiny tasks-fine motor skills-as well as the big jumping, hopping, and dancing actions-gross motor skills. The 5 senses are also under major construction during the preschool years. This module gives practical instruction on incorporating fine and gross motor skills, plus an understanding of how to tap into the senses, all so little ones can begin grasping biblical truth.
  • Fascinating Preschoolers with Science, Object Lessons, and Games
    MAY
    2017
This module includes tons of hands-on ideas for connecting a preschooler's "new" experiences with biblical truth. That's the way preschoolers learn. Students will learn how to utilize that natural development to enhance spiritual formation.
  • Classroom Management
    JUN
    2017
This module will introduce the critical skills associated with executive function, along with identifying ways to organize your group so every child feels significant. Good classroom management builds relationships, and since preschoolers are constantly changing, classroom management must be constantly tweaked.
  • Holy Habits (Scripture Memorization, Serving, and Prayer)
    JUL
    2017
You may think preschoolers are too young for scripture memorization, prayer, and serving, but introducing these Holy Habits at a young age will increase the probability that each one will become an undeniable part of their lives as they grow. This module is loaded with practical ready-to-use ideas.
  • Connecting with Parents
    AUG
    2017
Parents want support and help. If we truly believe that the church should invest in families, then equipping parents with resources, support, and information is critical. This module will provide tools and guidance necessary to connect with parents.
  • Setting Up an Early Childhood Ministry
    SEPT
    2017
This module will examine what is necessary and unnecessary for creating a nourishing, safe environment for little ones (including what toys, books, equipment, and personnel are appropriate) in order to lay a spiritual foundation for each child.

*Please note: The courses and dates are subject to change throughout the year.

Students are responsible to purchase books that go with each module. Your required reading list is going to be released in June.
